Patrick De Roeck: “With Flanders I’ve always made a profit”

Hardly any Flanders Foal Auctions pass him by and these days he is also present in Abu Dhabi. Belgian Patrick De Roeck is one of the regular investors and consignors at the auction. “I’m crazy about the game and with Flanders you know you’re buying quality,” he says on the VIP terrace of the Al Shira’aa Horse Show, enjoying the sun.

The first Flanders Foal Auction Patrick De Roeck attended was twelve years ago. “It became my return to breeding. I had bought a foal through connections, was looking for a place to raise it and that’s how I ended up with Luk Van Puymbroeck. Of course, he thought he auctioned better foals than the one I had bought and that’s how I came to the Flanders Foal Auction.”

Most success with higher-priced purchases
Over the years, many purchases have been made. “I’ve never gone to an auction thinking: ‘I have to buy something.’ It’s more like: ‘I could use something.’ I don’t think you should go to auctions with the idea that you must have one, because then you’ll quickly pay a high price. Still, the more expensive embryos and foals have brought me the most. The purchase price is actually the least important part of the whole process. You pay that only once. The costs afterward are the same, whether you have a good or a bad foal. So it’s better to buy a good one and you find those at Flanders. The quality you find there you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve met great people there, there’s always a good atmosphere and before you know it you’re in the flow,” he laughs.

Lover of the game
One thing is certain: if the embryo auctions were online only, Patrick De Roeck would not have bought nearly as many. “Not even half. I love the game, the bidding. In the meantime, together with Luk, I also consign foals and embryos. Thanks to Luk, because I find it more difficult myself to sell a home-bred foal. Every foal that’s born is the future world champion, right? Your own child is always a beautiful child. But we do keep raising the bar, it’s all about the very best damlines.”

Looking back at the purchases and sales, he can say that there has always been profit in the Flanders Foal Auction. “Tomorrow I’m auctioning two embryos, but I’ll certainly be buying as well. Everything I’ve bought has been born healthy, and I’ve done well with it. For example, together with Luk I own the six-year-old mare D’Ohla LVP Z, a promising Don VHP out of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Ohlala ridden by Laura Kraut. She was auctioned as an embryo in Sharjah.”

Most expensive purchase
The most expensive purchase was in 2019, at €44,000, for the stallion Notting Hill S (Cornet Obolensky out of the dam of Nevados S), the top-priced lot of the evening. “At the time that was really a lot of money for a foal, but I did very well with him by selling him last year. I also had a very good Diamant mare, Doudou van Overis, bred by Gerald Lenaerts. She was sold for a high price as a two-year-old. Recently we had Do it in de Bus van Koningsbos, also by Diamant, at the BWP stallion approval. Bought as a foal for €18,000 at Flanders and sold at auction for €58,000. That motivates you…”

Right prices at Flanders
“What I liked in the early years was that you could sometimes buy something privately before the auction, but that’s no longer the case. Breeders now play the game themselves. They know they get good prices at Flanders and they are the right prices. There’s no artificial bidding; the horses have to be sold. Another plus is that the day after the auction they put the prices online and indicate which foals were not sold. That also leads to additional sales. There are many opportunities for you as an investor. You need to surround yourself with the right people. I can say that with the Flanders Foal Auction, I’ve always made a profit.”

Patrick De Roeck: “Met Flanders heb ik altijd winst gehad”
Er gaan maar weinig Flanders Foal Auctions aan hem voorbij en ook deze dagen is hij erbij in Abu Dhabi. Patrick De Roeck uit België is één van de vaste investeerders en inzenders van de veiling. “Ik ben gek van het spelletje en bij Flanders weet je dat je kwaliteit koopt”, vertelt hij op het VIP-terras van de Al Shira’aa Horse Show.

De eerste Flanders Foal Auction die Patrick De Roeck bijwoonde is twaalf jaar geleden. “Het is mijn rentree in de fokkerij geworden. Ik had via via een veulen gekocht, zocht opfok en kwam daarvoor bij Luk Van Puymbroeck terecht. Hij vond natuurlijk dat hij betere veulens veilde dan dat ik had gekocht en zo kwam ik op de Flanders Foal Auction terecht.”

Meeste succes met duurdere aankopen
Door de jaren heen zijn er al veel aankopen gedaan. “Ik ben geen enkele keer naar de veiling gedaan met de gedachte: ‘Ik moet iets hebben. Het is meer: ‘Ik kan wel wat gebruiken.’ Ik denk niet dat je naar de veilingen mag gaan met het idee dat je er één moet hebben, dan betaal je al snel een hoge prijs. Toch hebben de duurdere embryo’s en veulens me het meest opgeleverd. De aankoopprijs is in feite ook het minst belangrijke in het traject. Die betaal je maar één keer. De kosten daarna zijn hetzelfde, of je nou een goed of een slecht veulen hebt. Dan beter een goede kopen en die vind je bij Flanders. De kwaliteit bij hen tref je nergens anders. Ik heb er leuke mensen leren kennen, er is altijd sfeer en voor je het weet zit je de flow”, lacht hij.

Liefhebber van het spelletje
Eén ding is zeker: Waren de embryoveilingen alleen online, dan had Patrick De Roeck er niet zoveel gekocht. “Nog niet de helft. Ik houd van het spelletje, van het bieden. Ondertussen breng ik samen met Luk ook veulens en embryo’s in. Met dank aan Luk, want ik vind het zelf lastiger om een eigen gefokt veulen te verkopen. Elk veulen dat geboren wordt, is de toekomstige wereldkampioen toch? Eigen kind, mooi kind. We leggen de lat wel steeds hoger, het gaat om de beste merrielijnen.”

Terugkijkend op de aan- en verkopen kan hij zeggen dat er altijd winst aan Flanders Foal Auction zit. “Ik veil morgen twee embryo’s, maar ga ook zeker wat kopen. Wat ik kocht, is altijd gezond geboren en ik ben er goed mee geweest. Zo heb ik samen met Luk de zesjarige merrie D’Ohla LVP Z, een veelbelovende Don VHP uit de 1.60m Grand Prix merrie Ohlala van Laura Kraut. Als embryo in Sharjah geveild.”

Duurste aankoop
De duurste aankoop was in 2019 met 44.000 euro voor de hengst Notting Hill S (Cornet Obolensky uit de moeder van Nevados S), de veilingtopper van de avond. “Dat was in die tijd toch echt veel geld voor een veulen, maar ik ben er heel goed mee geweest door verkoop vorig jaar. Ik heb ook een heel goede Diamant-merrie gehad, Doudou van Overis, gefokt door Gerald Lenaerts. Die is als tweejarige duur verkocht. Kortgeleden hadden we Do it in de Bus van Koningsbos, ook een Diamant, op de BWP-hengstenkeuring. Gekocht als veulen voor 18.000 euro, verkocht in de veiling voor 58.000 euro. Dat motiveert…”

Juiste prijzen bij Flanders
“Wat ik in de beginjaren leuk vond is dat je nog wel eens iets voor de veiling uit kon kopen, maar dat is niet meer. De fokkers spelen het spelletje nu zelf. Ze weten dat ze bij Flanders goede prijzen krijgen en het zijn ook de juiste prijzen. Er wordt niet opgeboden, ze moeten verkocht worden. Nog een pluspunt is dat ze een dag later de prijzen online zetten en vermelden welke veulens niet verkocht zijn, dat geeft ook dan toch weer verkopen. Er zijn veel kansen voor je als investeerder. Je moet je laten omringen door de juisten mensen. Ik kan zeggen dat ik aan Flanders Foal Auction steeds winst heb gehad.”
