New Records at Flanders Foal Auction: €136,000 for Ornellaia
Flanders Foal Auction answered many pressing questions with its first foal auction of the year. What is the value of a 20-year-old Olympic mare who delivered her first foal? Do global political unrest and wars affect auction prices? And does interest in jumping foals with proven pedigrees remain high? The outcome exceeded expectations, with an average price of €30,765.
A packed Sentower Park saw Ornellaia kick off the event in spectacular fashion. The For Pleasure mare, who had great success with John Whitaker and competed at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, attracted bids of up to €75,000 even before the auction has started, but that was just the beginning. Louis De Cleene brought the hammer down at €136,000 for the still-vital mare. The bidding war was won over the phone by the British-based Old Lodge Stud, founded by the late Prince Torki Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Kabeer of Saudi Arabia and now led by his son, Prince Sultan.
John Whitaker delighted
Ornellaia is a welcome addition to Old Lodge’s breeding program, and John Whitaker is thrilled with the acquisition. “My daughter pointed out that Ornellaia was going to be auctioned, and that got the ball rolling. I ride horses for Old Lodge. Prince Sultan is very interested in the sport and has taken over his father’s role. That mare still means so much to me. She has such a great mentality, always happy, ears always forward. I really like her. I’m pleased she’s going to such a nice place, and that we’ll be able to see her and her future foals,” said Whitaker, who followed the auction online.
The excitement continued with Ornellaia’s first filly, Coeur d’Or Z (Connor), purchased via phone for €66,000 by a well-known German journalist and horse breeder.
Son of Azur HH fetches €88,000
Confidence in proven bloodlines remained strong. Loyal Flanders client and Olympic medal winner Peter Charles bid €88,000 for the first foal ever auctioned from the legendary Grand Prix mare Azur HH, ridden by McLain Ward. This stunning colt, Côte d’Azur HH Z (Cornet Obolensky x Thunder van de Zuuthoeve), will move to his new home at Heathcroft Farm.
Two fillies were sold for €66,000: alongside Coeur d’Or Z was Carte Blanche van ’t Gelutt (United Touch S x Heartbreaker), a granddaughter of the highly successful broodmare Secret Love Wonderland. Two others changed hands for €45,000: Uptowngirl v/d Nachtegaal Z (United Touch S x Coronado), out of a 1.55m Grand Prix mare, and Diadole QC Z (Diamant de Semilly x Darco), out of the full sister to Winningmood (1.60m Grand Prix). The colts Jambo V.V. Z (J-Nius x Cornet Obolensky) and Victory VG (Comme il Faut x Indoctro) each brought in €38,000.
Global sales reach
In total, 33 out of 34 jumping foals were sold, 14 of them via online bidding. The international interest was striking, with sales to Argentina (3), USA, Mexico, UAE, Egypt (2), UK (2), Ireland (3), France, Spain (2), Switzerland (4), Germany (3), Belgium (7), the Netherlands, Poland, Estonia and Denmark (2).
Flanders Foal Auction has four more auctions scheduled this season. The upcoming collection for Peelbergen on Saturday, June 28, also promises to be of exceptional quality.

Nieuwe records Flanders Foal Auction: 136.000 euro voor Ornellaia
Flanders Foal Auction heeft met de eerste veulenveiling van het jaar antwoord kunnen geven op veel vragen. Wat is de waarde van een twintigjarige olympische merrie die dit jaar haar eerste veulen heeft gegeven? Hebben de politieke onrust en oorlogen wereldwijd invloed op de veilingprijzen en blijft de belangstelling in interessant gefokte springveulens onverminderd groot? De uitkomst was boven verwachting met een gemiddelde prijs van 30.765 euro.
In een volgepakt Sentower Park opende Ornellaia het spektakel. De For Pleasure-dochter die zo succesvol was met John Whitaker en op de Olympische Spelen van Rio de Janeiro sprong, ontlokte voor de veiling al biedingen tot 75.000 euro maar dat was nog maar het begin. Louis De Cleene kon de nog altijd vitale merrie voor 136.000 euro afslaan. Het telefonisch biedduel werd gewonnen door de Britse Old Lodge Stud, opgericht door wijlen prins Torki Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Kabeer uit Saudi-Arabië en nu voortgezet door zijn zoon prins Sultan.
John Whitaker verheugd
Ornellaia is een welkome aanvulling tot het fokprogramma van Old Lodge en ook John Whitaker is verheugd over de aankoop. “Mijn dochter wees me erop dat Ornellaia geveild ging worden en daarmee kwam de bal aan het rollen. Ik rijd paarden voor Old Lodge. Prins Sultan is zeer geïnteresseerd in de sport en heeft de rol van zijn vader overgenomen. De merrie doet me nog steeds heel veel. Ze heeft zo’n goede instelling. Altijd blij, altijd de oren naar voren. Ik was er altijd gek van en ben blij dat ze op zo’n fijne plek terecht komt en dat wij haar en haar veulens straks kunnen volgen”, vertelt John Whitaker, die de veiling online volgde.
Het spektakel ging verder met Ornellaia’s eerste merrieveulen Coeur d’Or Z (Connor), die door een bekende Duitse journalist en paardenfokker via de telefoon werd aangekocht voor 66.000 euro.
Zoon van Azur HH voor 88.000 euro
Er was nog meer vertrouwen in bewezen pedigrees, want trouwe Flanders klant, olympisch springruiter Peter Charles kocht voor 88.000 euro het eerste veilingveulen tot nu toe van de beroemde Grand Prix-merrie Azur HH met McLain Ward. Het hengstveulen Côte d'Azur HH Z (Cornet Obolensky x Thunder van de Zuuthoeve) verhuist naar zijn Heathcroft Farm.
Twee merrieveulens werden voor 66.000 euro verkocht: naast Coeur d’Or was dat Carte Blanche van ’t Gelutt (United Touch S x Heartbreaker), kleindochter van de goed fokkende Secret Love Wonderland. Twee merrieveulens verwisselden voor 45.000 euro van eigenaar: Uptowngirl v/d Nachtegaal Z (United Touch S x Coronado) uit een 1.55m Grand Prix merrie en Diadole QC Z (Diamant de Semilly x Darco) uit de volle zus van Winningmood (1.60m GP). Met 38.000 euro volgden de opvallende hengstveulens Jambo V.V. Z (J-Nius x Cornet Obolensky) en Victory VG (Comme il Faut x Indoctro).
Wereldwijde verkopen
In totaal werden 33 van de 34 springveulens verkocht, waarvan veertien online. Opvallend was de wereldwijde belangstelling met verkopen naar Argentinië (3), Amerika, Mexico, Emiraten, Egypte (2), Engeland (2), Ierland (3), Frankrijk, Spanje (2), Zwitserland (4), Duitsland (3), België (7), Nederland, Polen, Estland en Denemarken (2).
De Flanders Foal Auction heeft nog vier veulenveilingen op de kalender. De collectie voor Peelbergen op zaterdag 28 juni belooft ook zeer goed te zijn.

There was 66,000 euros for Blanche van t Gelutt (United Touch S x Heartbreaker)
