Flanders’ hype C-Bra van het Bokt sold to the Emirates for €402,000
The most-asked question of the past week from journalists and equestrian fans could finally be answered on Saturday evening, September 20, during the Flanders Foal Auction: What will C-Bra van het Bokt bring in? The spotted jumping foal became a true social media hype and was in worldwide demand, but no one had expected the €402,000 result. A new auction record for jumping foals was set.
Auction organizers Luk Van Puymbroek and Gerald Lenaerts had to get used to all the media attention around C-Bra van het Bokt and the camera crews that came to Sentower Park. Because of his special coat and excellent jumping bloodlines, people kept watching C-Bra’s videos. By the time of the auction day, one of the Reels had already been played 2.7 million times. National media from the Netherlands and Belgium visited breeder Steven Dhondt at home and on auction day, microphones were again pointed at him.
C-Bra van het Bokt broke all records. Not only in terms of revenue, but also in statistics. At the moment he entered the ring, more than a thousand people had activated the online bidding button. The phone lines were so busy that friends of Flanders Foal Auction had to step in to pass on bids. Germany and the U.S. held out for a long time, but the true finale was between another German bidder on the phone and an Olympic rider from the Emirates online. The Arab bidder won. Consignor Steven Dhondt from Pelt, Belgium, was embraced by his son and flooded with congratulations.
“This is the ultimate”
“I’m usually pretty cool, but this really gets to me,” he said, sweat drops on his forehead. “This is the ultimate; very few people will experience something like this. All the hype beforehand too. Secretly, I had hoped C-Bra would bring between €100,000 and €200,000, but €402,000, I would never have dared to dream of that. I’m a veterinarian and breed about ten foals a year. Not even to put them into auctions. I want to breed sport horses and I have several horses aged four to six in sport. But when I have something truly special, I don’t hesitate to present it at the Flanders Foal Auction. Earlier this year one of mine sold at Flanders for €16,000. So the average is good!”, he jokes.
C-Bra van het Bokt Z, sired by the Appaloosa showjumping stallion J-Nius V.V. Z, came into Steven Dhondt’s hands even before birth. “I had done the pregnancy management for the dam and was able to take over the recipient mare with embryo,” he explains. The dam, Come and Get Me VK Z (Conthargos x Clinton), is no stranger to the Flanders Foal Auction, as she was auctioned there four years ago for €48,000. She is out of Anoeska van de Ruitershoeve, dam of no fewer than seven Grand Prix horses at 1.50m, 1.55m, and 1.60m level, making her one of the best broodmares in the world.
Average €32,179
The overall average price of the 39 foals sold was €32,179. The “spotty show” drew the crowds, but the other foals were also of very high quality. They were sold to 17 different countries: 19 on site, 4 by telephone and 16 online. It was nearly half past midnight when the last foal was sold and still 422 people were online with their fingers on the bidding button.
€42,000 for the son of Kirby de Muze
In total, nine foals sold for more than €30,000. The second most expensive, at €42,000, was Espacito KCX Berghoeve Z (Emerald x Nabab de Rêve) out of the 1.50m level showjumping mare Kirby de Muze and grandson of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Heroine de Muze.
A Polish client placed the winning online bid of €38,000 for Usha Pearl Key Z (United Touch S x Toulon) from the Roosakker family. For €36,000, U and Me vd Berghoeve Z (United Touch S x Tolano van ’t Riethof), out of the half-sister of Gancia de Muze (1.70m Grand Prix), goes to Brazil. Top riders Richard Vogel and David Will from Germany bought Babette FFA Z (Baltic VDL x Chacco Blue), out of the half-sister of Balou du Reventon (1.70m Grand Prix), for €34,000.
To Ireland go Valencio (United Touch S x Baloubet du Rouet), half-brother of stallion Corlou PS (1.55m GP), for €34,000, and Catoki's Girl Power QC Z (Catoki x Comme il Faut), out of the half-sister of Glasgow van ’t Merelsnest (1.65m GP), for €32,000. For €30,000, Comme Nikita Field Z (Comme il Faut x Bamako de Muze), granddaughter of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Jeunesse van ’t Paradijs, stays in Belgium.

Flanders’ hype C-Bra van het Bokt voor 402.000 euro naar de Emiraten
De meest gestelde vraag van afgelopen week van journalisten en paardenliefhebbers kon zaterdagavond 20 september tijdens de Flanders Foal Auction beantwoord worden. Wat gaat C-Bra van het Bokt opbrengen? Het gespikkelde springveulen werd een regelrechte Social Media hype en was wereldwijd in trek, maar de 402.000 euro had niemand voorzien. Een nieuw veilingrecord onder de springveulens was gezet.
Veilingorganisatoren Luk Van Puymbroek en Gerald Lenaerts moesten even wennen aan alle media-aandacht rondom C-Bra van het Bokt en de cameraploegen die naar Sentower Park kwamen. Door zijn bijzondere vacht en springafstamming bleven mensen maar naar de video’s van C-Bra kijken. Eén van de Reels was ten tijde van de veilingdag al 2,7 miljoen keer afgespeeld. De landelijke media in Nederland en België kwamen bij fokker Steven Dhondt thuis, maar ook op de veilingdag waren de microfoons op hem gericht.
C-Bra van het Bokt verbrak alle records. Niet alleen qua opbrengst, maar ook qua statistieken. Op het moment van binnenkomst hadden meer dan duizend mensen de online biedknop geactiveerd. Aan de telefoon was het zo druk dat vrienden van Flanders Foal Auction bijsprongen om alle biedingen door te geven. Duitsland en Amerika hadden een zeer lange adem, maar de echte eindstrijd ging tussen een andere Duitse over de telefoon en een olympische ruiter uit de Emiraten online. De Arabier won. Inzender Steven Dhondt uit het Belgische Pelt wordt omhelst door zijn zoon en overspoeld door een vloedgolf aan felicitaties.
‘Dit is het ultieme’
“Ik ben van mezelf altijd wel cool, maar dit doet me wel wat hoor.” De zweetdruppels staan op zijn voorhoofd. “Dit is toch wel het ultieme, dit zullen maar weinig mensen meemaken. Al die reclame vooraf ook. Ik hoopte stiekem dat C-Bra tussen de 100.000 en 200.000 euro zou opbrengen, maar over 402.000 euro had ik nooit durven dromen. Ik ben dierenarts en fok zo’n tien veulens per jaar. Niet eens om ermee naar de veiling te gaan. Ik wil sportpaarden fokken en heb diverse paarden van vier tot en met zes jaar in de sport. Maar als ik dan eens iets speciaals heb, dan durf ik het wel aan te bieden aan Flanders Foal Auction. Eerder dit jaar is er ook één geveild, die bracht 16.000 euro op. Het gemiddelde is dus wel goed!”, grapt hij.
C-Bra van het Bokt Z, afstammend van de appaloosa springhengst J-Nius V.V. Z, kwam ongeboren al in handen van Steven Dhondt. “Ik had de drachtigheidsbegeleiding gedaan van de moeder en kon het embryo en de draagmerrie overnemen”, vertelt hij. Die moeder, Come and Get Me VK Z (Conthargos x Clinton), is een bekende van Flanders Foal Auction, want zij werd vier jaar geleden voor 48.000 euro geveild. Ze komt uit Anoeska van de Ruitershoeve, moeder van maar liefst zeven Grand Prix-springpaarden op 1.50m, 1.55m en 1.60m niveau en daarmee één van de beste fokmerries ter wereld.
Gemiddeld €32.179
De totaal gemiddelde prijs van de 39 verkochte veulens kwam op €32.179 uit. De ‘stippelshow’ bracht veel mensen op de been, maar de andere veulens waren ook van een zeer hoog niveau. Ze werden verkocht naar 17 verschillende landen: 19 in de zaal, 4 over de telefoon en 16 online. Het was al bijna half 1 ’s nachts toen de laatste afgeslagen werd, ook toen zaten er online nog 422 aan de biedknop.
42k voor zoon van Kirby de Muze
In totaal brachten negen veulens meer dan 30.000 euro op. De op één na duurste met 42.000 euro was Espacito KCX Berghoeve Z (Emerald x Nabab de Reve) uit de 1.50m springmerrie Kirby de Muze en kleinzoon van de 1.60m Grand Prix merrie Heroine de Muze.
Een Poolse klant plaatste online het winnende bod van 38.000 euro voor Usha Pearl Key Z (United Touch S x Toulon) uit de Roosakker familie. Voor 36.000 euro gaat U and Me vd Berghoeve Z (United Touch S x Tolano van ’t Riethof) uit de halfzus van Gancia de Muze (1.70m Grand Prix) naar Brazilië. Topspringruiters Richard Vogel en David Will uit Duitsland kochten Babette FFA Z (Baltic VDL x Chacco Blue) uit de halfzus van Balou du Reventon (1.70m Grand Prix) voor 34.000 euro.
Naar Ierland voor respectievelijk 34.000 en 32.000 euro gaan Valencio (United Touch S x Baloubet du Rouet), de halfbroer van de hengst Corlou PS (1.55m GP) en Catoki's Girl Power QC Z (Catoki x Comme il Faut) uit de halfzus van Glasgow van ’t Merelsnest (1.65m GP). Voor 30.000 euro blijft Comme Nikita Field Z (Comme il Faut x Bamako de Muze), de kleindochter van de 1.60m Grand Prix-merrie Jeunesse van ’t Paradijs, in België.
