Flanders embryos once again spread across the globe
It may still take some time, but Arabian showjumping is set to welcome a new generation of sport horses in the future (inter)national arena. Arabian owners and riders seized their opportunity to secure multiple embryos during the Flanders Embryo Auction in Abu Dhabi. Fifteen embryos were sold on Friday, 23 January, to buyers around the world, achieving an average price of €26,267.
Earlier-sold embryos had already promoted the auction during the day in the international arena of the Al Shira’aa Horse Show and it was mainly returning clients - well acquainted with investing in embryos - who once again made purchases.
The auction kicked off with the sale of three coverings by Al Shira’aa stallions, generating a total of €20,000. HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Al Nahyan of Al Shira’aa Stables is donating the full amount to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund Charity.
J-Nius V.V. Z proves highly popular
The very first embryo was immediately sold to the Emirates for the top price of €52,000. Not a Chacco Blue, United Touch S or Emerald, but an offspring of the Appaloosa showjumping stallion J-Nius V.V. Z claimed the spotlight. This foal is expected to be born around 20 February and is bred out of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Isaura Ter Putte (Tinka’s Boy), the half-sister of Elvis Ter Putte (1.60m Grand Prix).
The sale of J-Nius son C-Bra van het Bokt for €402,000 to the Emirates caused quite a stir. As a result, the J-Nius V.V. Z out of Emerald’s full sister Jenna van het Meulenhof fetched €30,000 and was acquired by the Belgian Exclusive Stables of Paulien Schepers. Together with her mother, she invested on site in four embryos, including a United Touch S out of the same dam as top showjumper Impress-K van ’t Kattenheye, which sold for €42,000.
Studfarm ’t Kattenheye concluded a successful evening with this sale and immediately bought back an embryo by phone: an Ermitage Kalone out of a high-quality daughter of the famous Dubai du Cedre (1.65m Grand Prix).
An Emerald out of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Toveks Mary Lou, who earned more than €1.7 million with Henrik von Eckermann, will also move to the Belgian Exlusive Stables for €34,000. The Balou du Reventon out of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Coriana van Klapscheut was knocked down for the same amount.
Extensive supply
The average price was only fractionally lower than last year’s record auction in the Emirates; the difference this year was that not all embryos were sold.
“That can be due to several factors. This year we auctioned on Friday instead of Saturday, quite early in the day for Europe, but we should also not underestimate how much has already come onto the market. The supply of embryos from top damlines has increased enormously. Very good prices are still being paid, but only for something that truly stands out,” analyse Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts.

Arabische eigenaren en ruiters grepen hun kans om meerdere embryo’s vast te leggen tijdens de Flanders Embryo Auction in Abu Dhabi. Vijftien werden er vrijdag 23 januari verkocht, over de hele wereld, voor een gemiddelde prijs van 26.267 euro.
Eerder verkochte embryo’s maakten overdag in de internationale piste van de Al Shira’aa Horse Show al reclame voor de veiling en het waren vooral terugkerende klanten die bekend zijn met het kopen van een embryo en opnieuw investeerden.
De veiling trapte af met de verkoop van drie dekkingen van Al Shira’aa hengsten, samen goed voor 20.000 euro. HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Al Nahyan van de Al Shira’aa Stables doneert het volledige bedrag aan de Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund Charity.
J-Nius V.V. Z populair
Het eerste embryo werd direct voor de topprijs van 52.000 euro naar de Emiraten verkocht. Geen Chacco Blue, United Touch S of een Emerald, maar een nakomeling van de Appaloosa springhengst J-Nius V.V. Z. Deze wordt rond 20 februari al geboren en komt uit de 1.60m Grand Prix-merrie Isaura Ter Putte (Tinka’s Boy), de halfzus van Elvis Ter Putte (1.60m Grand Prix).
De verkoop van J-Nius-zoon C-Bra van het Bokt voor 402.000 euro naar de Emiraten heeft veel los gemaakt, want de J-Nius V.V. Z uit Emerald’s volle zus Jenna van het Meulenhof bracht 30.000 euro op en viel in handen van de Belgische Exclusive Stables van Paulien Schepers. Stoeterij ‘t Kattenheye deed hiermee een goede zaak en kocht per telefoon direct wat terug: de Ermitage Kalone uit een kwaliteitsvolle dochter van Dubai du Cedre (1.65m Grand Prix).
Ook de Emerald uit de 1.60m Grand Prix merrie Toveks Mary Lou, die meer dan 1,7 miljoen euro won met Henrik Von Eckermann, gaat naar de stal van Paulien Schepers voor 34.000 euro. Voor hetzelfde bedrag werd de Balou du Reventon uit de 1.60m Grand Prix-merrie Coriana van Klapscheut afgeslagen.
Veel aanbod
De gemiddelde prijs lag maar een fractie lager dan de recordveiling van vorig jaar in de Emiraten, het verschil is dat dit jaar niet alle embryo’s verkocht werden. “Dat kan diverse redenen hebben. We veilden nu op vrijdag in plaats van zaterdag, in Europa vrij vroeg op de dag, maar we mogen ook niet onderschatten wat er al allemaal op de markt is gekomen. Het aanbod van embryo’s uit goede families is enorm gestegen. Er worden nog altijd zeer goede prijzen betaald, maar dan wel voor iets dat echt apart is”, analyseren Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts.
