Flanders Foal Nibali doesn’t have a price

Team Flanders Foal Auction has settled at MET Oliva for the embryo auction on Saturday evening, February 21, and has already spotted six showjumping horses that were auctioned by ‘Flanders’ as foals. Nibali (Casallo Z x Balou du Rouet), for example, is one of the best eight-year-old showjumpers on the European circuit. He has already jumped clear in his first 1.45m ranking classes and finished fourth yesterday in the 1.45m opening class with Mariano Martínez Bastida.

Straight out of the ring, Flanders team member Mark Oude Griep took the opportunity to pat his homebred on the neck. “Nibali is the very first foal I sold through Flanders Foal Auction,” says Mark, who has been involved in the selection of foals and embryos for eight years. “I follow him closely. His results are incredibly good. Out of 60 international starts, he has already claimed 11 victories and has finished in the prizes almost 60% of the time.”

Family
Mark Oude Griep bred Nibali out of the KWPN Elite Performance mare Balou Lady (Balou du Rouet x Acord II). “She has since passed away, but I still have a few frozen embryos from her, a yearling, a six-year-old, and a seven-year-old by Colman competing at 1.30m level.” In addition, she produced five international horses at 1.35–1.45m level and is a half-sister to the 1.60m Grand Prix horses Sterrehof’s Voltaire and Balou Z.

Mariano Martínez Bastida, who rents permanent stables at MET Oliva, becomes immediately enthusiastic when talking about Nibali, although he almost did not buy him last year. “They said he was eight, but he turned out to be seven. That made me doubt, because I thought he was too young,” explains the Global Tour rider. “But something told me he could be special. The feeling he gave me was so good, really different from what other horses give me.”

A horse for top sport
“In the beginning, Nibali was a bit shy and he has so much quality. His confidence has grown enormously over the winter. I now feel he is going a horse fort he top sport. If I’m considering selling? Oh no, I’ve already had very interesting offers, but I don’t have a price for him,” the Spaniard laughs.

More Flanders foals
He has since purchased more foals from Flanders Foal Auction. “I went to Sentower Park and didn’t intend to buy anything, but I saw everyone around me bidding, so I ended up buying four myself,” he laughs.

Last year, his partner María López de la Vara bought the filly Eleonore van Overis Z (Ermitage Kalone) at Flanders Foal Auction. “When I walked through the stables, I immediately fell in love with the photo hanging there. The foal itself hadn’t even arrived yet. It will be a long wait before we know how well the foals will jump, but we are very happy with these purchases,” she says.

‘Flanders veulen’ Nibali heeft geen prijs

Team Flanders Foal Auction is neergestreken op MET Oliva voor de embryoveiling op zaterdagavond 21 februari en heeft al zes springpaarden gespot die als veulen geveild zijn. Nibali (Casallo Z x Balou du Rouet) bijvoorbeeld, één van de beste achtjarige springpaarden in het Europese circuit. Hij heeft zijn eerste 1.45m rankingproeven al foutloos gesprongen en werd gisteren vierde in de 1.45m openingsrubriek met Mariano Martinez Bastida.

Direct uit de ring pakte Flanders teamlid Mark Oude Griep de kans om zijn fokproduct op de hals te kloppen. “Nibali is mijn allereerste veulen dat ik via Flanders Foal Auction verkocht”, vertelt Mark, die nu al acht jaar betrokken is bij de selectie van de veulens en embryo’s. “Ik volg hem op de voet. De resultaten zijn ongelooflijk goed. Van de internationale 60 starts heeft hij al 11 overwinningen en was hij bijna 60% in de prijzen.”

Familie
Mark Oude Griep fokte Nibali uit de preferente prestatiemerrie Balou Lady (Balou du Rouet x Acord II). “Ze is inmiddels overleden, maar ik heb er nog een paar diepvriesembryo’s van, een jaarling, een zesjarige en een zevenjarige Colman die 1.30m springt.” Ze gaf daarnaast vijf internationale springpaarden op 1.35-1.45m niveau en is een halfzus van de 1.60m Grand Prix paarden Sterrehof’s Voltaire en Balou Z.

Mariano Martinez Bastida, die vaste stallen huurt op MET Oliva, wordt direct enthousiast als hij over Nibali vertelt, al had hij hem bijna niet gekocht vorig jaar. “Ze zeiden dat hij acht was, maar hij bleek zeven te zijn. Dat bracht me aan het twijfelen, want ik vond dat te jong”, vertelt de Global Tour ruiter. “Maar iets in me zei me dat dit een speciale kon worden. Het gevoel dat hij me gaf was zo goed, echt anders dan dat andere paarden mij geven.”

Paard voor topsport
“In het begin was Nibali haast wat te verlegen, hij heeft ook zoveel kwaliteit. Het zelfvertrouwen is afgelopen winter enorm gegroeid. Ik heb nu het gevoel dat het een paard voor de topsport is. Of ik overweeg om te verkopen? Oh nee, ik heb al zeer interessante biedingen gehad, maar hij heeft geen prijs”, lacht de Spanjaard.

Meer Flanders veulens
Inmiddels heeft hij al meer veulens van Flanders Foal Auction. “Ik ben op Sentower Park geweest en wilde niets kopen, maar ik zag iedereen om me heen bieden dat ik er zelf ook vier kocht”, lacht hij. Afgelopen jaar kocht zijn partner María López de la Vara het merrieveulen Eleonore van Overis Z (Ermitage Kalone). “Toen ik door de stallen liep was ik al direct verliefd op de foto die daar hing, het veulen was er zelf nog niet. Het is nog lang wachten tot we weten of ze goed springen, maar we zijn blij met deze aankopen”, vertelt ze.
