Flanders Foal Auction opens with €260,000 for Irenice Horta
The Flanders Embryo Auction in Dublin was already spectacular, but a day later Sentower Park was no less impressive. On Saturday, August 9, the Flanders Foal Auction opened with the sale of the 17-year-old Grand Prix mare Irenice Horta (Vigo d’Arsouilles x Diamant de Semilly). “Better take a seat, this might take a while,” predicted Louis De Cleene. After a flurry of bidding, the hammer fell at €260,000, sold over the phone to France.
The sale of Irenice Horta is an exceptional opportunity for any breeder, especially as just a day earlier embryos out of absolute top mares had sold for €88,000 and €84,000. Irenice Horta herself placed seventh at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon with Lorenzo De Luca, achieved top placings with Cian O’Connor, has already produced two 1.60m and two 1.50m Grand Prix horses and she has a 1.60m Grand Prix dam herself. Mares so thoroughly proven on all fronts rarely come onto the market.
Immediately after Irenice Horta, her high-quality filly foal Coeur d’Irenice Z (Cero Blue TN) was sold online to America for €64,000. “We’re happy we could reward the trust of the consignor with these prices. We remain primarily a foal and embryo auction, of course, but we couldn’t pass up such a unique opportunity. The new owners are going to be very happy with these mares,” said Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts.
Average of €23,100
A total of 34 foals were sold to fifteen different countries for an average price of €23,100. The average price for a filly was €27,500, and for a coltl €20,050. Eleven times an online bidder won the auction; all other times a champagne bottle could be handed over on-site. Spain leads with six purchases, followed by England with five. France and the Netherlands each bought three foals, followed by America, Ireland, Germany and Poland with two foals each.
Investing for the sport
Among the buyers were 5* Grand Prix riders as well as investors, such as Luis Javier Gonzalez, a Mexican living in Madrid. He came to the Flanders Foal Auction for the second time, this time securing five foals with the aim of developing them for sport with his riders Sergio Alvarez Moya and Angela Gonzalez Muñoz. “The pedigrees here are strong, but the foals also appeal in type and canter. The best damline is no guarantee and there are always surprises in this sport, but we find it an interesting concept to start with foals and then develop them for sport.”
Among the foals heading to Spain are Catoki van de Eijkhof Z (Catoki x Kassander van ’t Roosakker), granddaughter of Panama du Seigneur, for €44,000, and Elena E4U Z (Ermitage Kalone x Diamant de Semilly) out of the full sister to Emerald for €32,000.
Top rider Philipp Weishaupt also signed for several foals, including Z-Festival winner Audi Z (Aganix du Seigneur x Chacco Blue) for €32,000. Audi’s dam is a half-sister to the stallion Jaguar vd Berghoeve, participant at the World Equestrian Games with Matthew Sampson.
For €32,000 each, the filly foals Bibi v/d Nachtegaal Z (Balou du Reventon x Cracker Jack), out of the half-sister to Cumano and Chamau ter Selle van ’t Vlasmeer (United Touch S x Ludwig von Bayern) are heading to France and Switzerland respectively.
Flanders Foal Auction will return to Sentower Park on September 20 for the last foal auction of the year, followed by the next embryo auction on November 1 in Samorin.

De Flanders Foal Auction opende zaterdag 9 augustus met de verkoop van de 17-jarige Grand Prix-merrie Irenice Horta (Vigo d’Arsouilles x Diamant de Semilly). “Ga er maar voor zitten, het kan even gaan duren”, voorspelde Louis De Cleene. De veilinghamer viel na stormachtige biedingen bij 260.000 euro, over de telefoon verkocht naar Frankrijk.
De verkoop van Irenice Horta is een uitzonderlijke kans voor menig fokker, want een dag eerder werden embryo’s uit absolute topmerries voor 88.000 euro en 84.000 euro afgeslagen. Irenice Horta werd zelf zevende op de Wereldruiterspelen in Tryon met Lorenzo De Luca, behaalde topklasseringen met Cian O’Connor, heeft zelf al twee 1.60m en twee 1.50m Grand Prix-paarden gebracht en komt zelf uit een 1.60m Grand Prix moeder. Zulke rondom bewezen merries komen zelden op de markt.
Direct na Irenice Horta werd haar kwaliteitsvolle merrieveulen Coeur d’Irenice Z (Cero Blue TN) voor 64.000 euro online verkocht naar Amerika. “We zijn blij dat we het vertrouwen van de inzender konden belonen met deze prijzen. We blijven in eerste instantie natuurlijk een veulen- en embryoveiling, maar zo’n unieke kans konden we niet aan ons voorbij laten gaan. De nieuwe eigenaren gaan hier blij mee zijn,” weten Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts
Gemiddeld 23.100 euro
Er werden 34 veulens verkocht naar vijftien verschillende landen voor een gemiddelde prijs van 23.100 euro. Voor een merrieveulen werd gemiddeld 27.500 euro betaald, voor een hengstveulen 20.050 euro. Elf keer won een online bieder de veiling, alle andere keren kon een champagnefles ter plekke overhandigd worden. Naar Spanje gaan er zes, naar Engeland vijf. Frankrijk en Nederland volgen met 3 aankopen, gevolgd door Amerika, Ierland, Duitsland en Polen met elk twee veulens.
Investeren voor de sport
Er waren 5* Grand Prix ruiters die kochten, maar ook investeerders, zoals Luis Javier Gonzalez, een Mexicaan die in Madrid woont. Hij kwam voor de tweede keer naar de Flanders Foal Auction, ditmaal om vijf veulens vast te leggen met het oog op de sport voor zijn ruiters Sergio Alvarez Moya en Angela Gonzalez Muñoz. “Hier zijn de pedigrees sterk, maar de veulens spreken ook qua type en galop aan. De beste merrielijn geeft nog geen garantie en je houdt altijd verrassingen in deze sport, maar we vinden het een interessante formule om met veulens te beginnen en deze straks op te leiden voor de sport.”
Onder de veulens die straks naar Spanje gaan, bevinden zich Catoki van de Eijkhof Z (Catoki x Kassander van ’t Roosakker), kleindochter van Panama du Seigneur, voor 44.000 euro, en Elena E4U Z (Ermitage Kalone x Diamant de Semilly) uit de volle zus van Emerald voor 32.000 euro.
Topruiter Philipp Weishaupt tekende ook voor meerdere veulens af, zoals bij Z-Festival winnaar Audi Z (Aganix du Seigneur x Chacco Blue) voor 32.000 euro. Audi’s moeder is een halfzus van de hengst Jaguar vd Berghoeve, deelnemer aan de World Equestrian Games met Matthew Sampson.

Flanders Foal Auction komt op 20 september terug naar Sentower Park voor de laatste veulenveiling van het jaar, waarna er op 1 november weer embryo’s geveild worden in Samorin.
