Flanders Foal Auction defies predictions: €60,000 for Untouched colt
One thing is certain: the outcome of an auction is impossible to predict. As Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts do one final check on all the Flanders auction foals in the tent stables at Holger Hetzel Stables, they still can’t answer the most-asked question: “Which foal will be the top seller tonight?” Silence follows. There are favorites, global interest is high, but no single name stands out. That a son of Untouched (1.60m Grand Prix stallion, who died in 2016 at just nine years old) would top the list with a price tag of €60,000 came as a surprise.
The Flanders Foal Auction, held on the evening of Saturday, July 26, marked its fourth consecutive edition in Goch, Germany. Just before the auction kicked off, Byblosh – K van Kattenheye Z (Bamako de Muze) made for a perfect promotional moment by finishing second in the final for six-year-old showjumpers at the ‘Tiemeyer x Holger Hetzel Young Horse Masters’ with Johannes Ehning. The grandson of Farah van Klapscheut (1.60m Grand Prix) was sold by Flanders Foal Auction in Bonheiden for €15,000.
Average of €25,200
Buyers at Hetzel Stables had to reach deeper into their wallets. Of the 30 foals offered, 26 were sold for an average price of €25,200. German buyers claimed no less than eleven foals. Clients from Argentina purchased three on-site. Three foals went to Belgian buyers. Poland, China and Ireland each accounted for two foals. One foal will move to Brazil. Over 40% of the foals were sold online, underlining the strength and reach of Flanders Foal Auction’s digital platform.
For a good cause
The auction evening was full of highlights. Host Holger Hetzel and Uwe Smits of Frankonia Real Estate and also the owner of the luxurious hotel The Wellem in Düsseldorf, had already announced their plan to purchase a foal to later auction off at the Holger Hetzel Sport Horse Sales in support of the charity ‘RTL Wir Helfen Kindern’ (We help children). They initially had their eye on the Appaloosa, but “since auctions don’t always go as planned, we had a plan B and C,” Hetzel explained.
They kicked things off by purchasing Lot 1, El Loco Z (Ermitage Kalone x Diamant de Semilly), for €30,000. The colt is a half-sister to the nine-year-old Crazy in Love (1.50m level showjumping) who was auctioned by Holger Hetzel in 2023 for €1 million. Their plan succeeded when they secured the strikingly marked Joker v/d Nachtegaal Z (J-Nius V.V. Z x Chinchero) out of the Cumano line, for €25,000.
China battles up to €60,000
It was two online bidders from China who brought the fireworks when Ucolino V.V. Z (Untouched x Comme il Faut) entered the ring. The colt, bred by Evelyne Van Vreckom (who also bred and owns Joker’s sire J-Nius V.V. Z out of the same Ligie line), quickly fetched €60,000. Evelyne shares ownership with Doron Kuipers.
“I was given half of the pregnancy, as a result of the friendship and good cooperation we’ve built,” said the Dutch showjumper proudly. “It’s really special. I used to ride Sea Coast Chica V.V. Z for Gudrun Patteet, who now competes at 1.55m level. Evelyne owned Chica’s full sister, Cocolina V.V. Z, who is the dam of this auction colt. I started riding her just before she turned seven and we sold her when she was jumping at 1.40m level to Mark Bluman. She quickly racked up successes in the U.S. and is now competing at 1.50m level at age nine.”
“Friendship is about giving and taking,” said Evelyne Van Vreckom. “I’ve benefited so much from Doron’s advice and everything he does for me. This is a beautiful result and great promotion for my breeding program. I try to get people excited about the foals myself, but Flanders Foal Auction does a fantastic job. Luk and Gerald are walking encyclopedias when it comes to damlines. I truly believe this auction will only continue to grow.”
€44,000 to Argentina
Unique de Nyze Z (United Touch S x Diamant de Semilly) was sold for €44,000 to an Argentinian buyer. A Polish client placed a winning bid of €38,000 for Charlie Chaplin van WW Z (Chacco Blue x Kashmir van Schuttershof). No fewer than five foals sold for €30,000 each, with regular Flanders breeders shaking hands at the event. Patrick De Roeck and his son purchased Elseflash DW Z (Eldorado van de Zeshoek x For Pleasure), a granddaughter of Walnut de Muze, from Nico De Wilde and family.
Upcoming Auctions
Flanders Foal Auction is moving full steam ahead. On Friday, August 8, the Flanders Embryo Auction will be held in Dublin, followed by a new foal auction the next day at Sentower Park. The collections will be published online as soon as possible on our website.

Flanders Foal Auction laat zich niet voorspellen: 60.000 euro voor Untouched-zoon
Een ding staat vast: Een verloop van een veiling is niet te voorspellen. Terwijl ze alle Flanders veilingveulens nog één keer in de tentenstallen op Holger Hetzel Stables checken, weten Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts het antwoord niet op de vraag die gesteld wordt. “Welk veulen is de beoogde veilingtopper vanavond?” Het blijft even stil. Er zijn favorieten, er is wereldwijd vraag naar de veulens, maar er valt geen specifieke naam. Dat een zoon van Untouched (1.60m Grand Prix en in 2016 overleden op negenjarige leeftijd) de duurste zou worden met 60.000 euro was in elk geval niet verwacht.
De Flanders Foal Auction op zaterdagavond 26 juli was de vierde editie op rij in het Duitse Goch. Net voor de start maakte Byblosh – K van Kattenheye Z (Bamako de Muze) prachtige promotie door met Johannes Ehning tweede te worden in de finale voor zesjarige springpaarden tijdens de ‘Tiemeyer x Holger Hetzel Young Horse Masters’. De kleinzoon van Farah van Klapscheut (1.60m GP) is door Flanders Foal Auction in Bonheiden geveild voor 15.000 euro.
Gemiddeld 25.200 euro
Wie op Hetzel Stables een veulen wilde kopen, moest iets dieper in de portemonnee kijken. De gemiddelde prijs van de 26 (van de 30) verkochte veulens kwam uit op 25.200 euro. Duitsers legden maar liefst elf veulens vast, Argentijnse klanten kochten er ter plekke drie. Drie veulens gingen over in Belgische handen. Polen, China en Ierland volgden met elk twee aankopen. Eén veulen gaat naar Brazilië. Ruim 40% van de veulens werd online verkocht en dat tekent de sterke achterban en online kracht van Flanders Foal Auction.
Voor goede doel
Er gebeurde veel op de veilingavond. Gastheer Holger Hetzel en Uwe Smits van ‘Frankonia Vastgoed’ en eigenaar van het luxueuze hotel ‘The Wellem’ in Düsseldorf hadden al verklapt dat ze een veulen wilden kopen om tijdens de Holger Hetzel Sport Horse Sales te veilen voor het goede doel ‘RTL Wir Helfen Kindern’. Hun oog viel op de Appaloosa, maar “omdat je in een veiling niet altijd alles kan kopen wat je in gedachten hebt, hadden we een plan B en plan C”, vertelt Holger Hetzel.
Ze begonnen met de aankoop van nummer 1 voor 30.000 euro, El Loco Z (Ermitage Kalone x Diamant de Semilly), de halfzus van de negenjarige Crazy in Love (1.50m springen) die Holger Hetzel in 2023 veilde voor 1 miljoen euro. Het plan slaagde met de opvallend getekende Joker v/d Nachtegaal Z (J-Nius V.V. Z x Chinchero) uit de stam van Cumano voor 25.000 euro.
China strijdt tot 60.000 euro
Het waren online bieders, met name twee verschillende klanten uit China, die spektakel brachten toen Ucolino V.V. Z (Untouched x Comme il Faut) in de baan verscheen. Het hengstveulen van Evelyne Van Vreckom (ook fokster en eigenaresse van Joker’s vader J-Nius V.V. Z en afkomstig uit de Ligie-lijn), bracht in no-time 60.000euro op, waarvan ze de helft deelt met mede-eigenaar Doron Kuipers.
“Ik kreeg de helft van de dracht, ontstaan uit vriendschap en de fijne samenwerking die we hebben”, glundert de Nederlandse springruiter. “Echt heel bijzonder. Ik reed al eens Sea Coast Chica V.V. Z voor Gudrun Patteet, die nu 1.55m springt. Evelyne had Chica’s volle zus Cocolina V.V. Z staan, de moeder van dit veilingveulen. Ik begon haar te rijden als bijna zevenjarige en we verkochten toen ze 1.40m sprong aan Mark Bluman. Meteen daarna volgden successen in Amerika en ze springt nu 1.50m met haar negen jaar.”
“Vriendschap is geven en nemen”, vertelt Evelyne Van Vreckom. “Ik heb ook veel aan alle adviezen van Doron en wat hij voor mij doet. Dit is een prachtig resultaat en goede reclame voor mijn eigen fokkerij. Ik probeer zelf ook mensen ‘hot’ te maken voor de veulens, maar Flanders Foal Auction doet het natuurlijk ook fantastisch. Luk en Gerald zijn een encyclopedie op hun eigen. Ze weten zoveel over moederlijnen. Ik denk dat deze veiling alleen nog maar doorgroeit.”
Voor 44.000 euro naar Argentinië
Voor 44.000 euro werd Unique de Nyze Z (United Touch S x Diamant de Semilly) naar Argentinië verkocht. Een Poolse klant bood 38.000 euro voor Charlie Chaplin van WW Z (Chacco Blue x Kashmir van Schuttershof). Maar liefst vijf veulens werden voor 30.000 euro afgeslagen, waarbij vaste Flanders-inzenders elkaar ter plekke de hand schudden. Patrick De Roeck en zoon kochten Walnut de Muze’s kleindochter Elseflash DW Z (Eldorado van de Zeshoek x For Pleasure) van Nico De Wilde en familie.
