Flanders Embryo Auction: €50,000 for Ping Pong’s full brother or sister
International showjumpers and investors once again demonstrated their confidence in the Flanders Embryo Auction. The very first edition in Spain concluded last night, February 21, with an average price of €19,737 and a spectacular top price of €50,000 for the full brother or sister of the pinto Ping Pong van de Lentamel (Emerald x Toulon).
A proven pedigree is the primary requirement for inclusion in the Flanders Embryo Auction catalogue, but today’s market may be looking for something extra: the chance of a distinctive color. One month ago, the most expensive embryo at the Flanders Embryo Auction in Abu Dhabi sold for €52,000, not only because it came from a 1.60m Grand Prix mare, but also due to the possibility of an Appaloosa coat, with J-Nius V.V. Z as sire.
Then there is Ping Pong van de Lentamel, the piebald 5* Grand Prix winner ridden by Gerrit Nieberg. The breeder gave Flanders the opportunity to auction his full brother or sister. The foal, due in May, will not have far to travel, as a Belgian investor purchased the embryo on site at MET Oliva for €50,000.
The new venue delivered everything Flanders Embryo Auction had hoped for: a beautiful and atmospheric setting, many new clients and a strong sales percentage. Of the 24 embryos offered, 19 were sold to buyers from ten different countries: 12 on site, one by telephone and six online.
“Now we just need Spanish clients, because there weren’t any,” joked Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts. “We absolutely intend to return to MET Oliva. This was a very successful auction. With embryo auctions, you never quite know what the response will be, but the atmosphere was incredible, we were fully booked in terms of tables and buyers purchased wisely. Many of these embryos will already be born soon!”
The retired HH Azur (Thunder vd Zuuthoeve), still the world’s highest-earning showjumping mare with McLain Ward, produced the second most expensive embryo. Luk Van Puymbroeck sold this Darry Lou embryo for €40,000 over the phone to an American lady.
A Czech buyer on site secured the United Touch S embryo out of the 1.50m level showjumping mare Exquise Lulu (Guarana Champeix) for €30,000. The dam line includes both a mother and grandmother who competed at 1.60m Grand Prix level.
British showjumper Philip Spivey, who has brought eight horses to MET Oliva, had his eye on the Heartbreaker x Nabab de Rêve embryo. Not only because it is bred out of New Classic (1.50m level), the half-sister of United Touch Z (1.70m GP), Zypria S (1.70m GP) and Deauville (1.60m GP), but especially because it is by Heartbreaker. “I had Romanov, the Heartbreaker who later won a 5* Grand Prix with Bertram Allen. A phenomenon and I dream of having another horse like that. If not for myself, then for my fourteen-year-old daughter.”
From a pedigree perspective, it is a strong investment: great-granddam Cantate Touch jumped at 1.60m Grand Prix level and produced two 1.60m Grand Prix horses. The great-great-granddam is the famous Classic Touch, a phenomenon under Ludger Beerbaum and the dam of both a 1.60m and a 1.55m Grand Prix horse.
For €28,000, a Comme Il Faut embryo out of Inka van ’t Roosakker (Calvaro Z) was purchased on site by clients from Poland. Inka has already produced four Grand Prix horses (one at 1.70m level, one at 1.60m level and two at 1.50m level).

Internationale springruiters en investeerders hebben opnieuw hun vertrouwen getoond in de Flanders Embryo Auction. De allereerste editie in Spanje werd gisteravond 21 februari afgerond met een gemiddelde prijs van 19.737 euro en een spectaculaire 50.000 euro voor de volle broer of zus van de bonte Ping Pong van de Lentamel (Emerald x Toulon).
Een bewezen pedigree is de eerste voorwaarde om in de catalogus van de Flanders Embryo Auction te worden opgenomen, maar de markt vraagt misschien wel om nog iets extra’s. Dat is de kans op een aparte kleur. Een maand geleden bracht het duurste embryo van de Flanders Embryo Auction in Abu Dhabi 52.000 euro op. Niet alleen omdat deze uit een 1.60m Grand Prix merrie komt, maar ook omdat er kans is op een Appaloosa vacht met J-Nius V.V. Z als vader.
Dan is er Ping Pong van de Lentamel, de bonte 5* Grand Prix winnaar met Gerrit Nieberg. De fokker gaf Flanders de kans om de volle zus of broer te veilen. Ver hoeft het veulen dat in mei geboren wordt niet te reizen, want het was een Belgische investeerder die hem terplekke op MET Oliva kocht voor 50.000 euro.
De nieuwe locatie bracht Flanders Embryo Auction alles waar opgehoopt werd. Een mooie en sfeervolle ambiance, veel nieuwe klanten en een goed verkooppercentage. Van de 24 embryo’s werden er 19 verkocht aan tien verschillende landen. Daarvan 12 ter plekke, één per telefoon en zes online.
“Nu nog Spaanse klanten, want die waren er niet”, grappen Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts. “We hebben absoluut de intentie om dit op MET Oliva te herhalen. Dit was een heel goede veiling. Het is toch altijd afwachten hoe de respons is op een embryo veiling, maar de sfeer was ongelooflijk goed, we waren volgeboekt qua aantal tafels en er is goed en verstandig ingekocht. Veel embryo’s worden binnenkort al geboren!"
Het was HH Azur (Thunder vd Zuuthoeve), tot op heden de meestverdienende springmerrie ter wereld met McLain Ward, die het op één na duurste embryo leverde. Luk Van Puymbroeck verkocht deze Darry Lou voor 40.000 euro over de telefoon aan een Amerikaanse klant.
Een Tsjechische koper ter plekke had het winnende bod van 30.000 euro voor de United Touch S uit de 1.50m springmerrie Exquise Lulu (Guarana Champeix), die een moeder en grootmoeder heeft op 1.60m Grand Prix niveau.
De Britse springruiter Philip Spivey, die acht paarden mee heeft naar MET Oliva, had zijn zinnen gezet op de Heartbreaker x Nabab de Reve. Niet alleen omdat deze gefokt is uit New Classic (1.50m springen), de halfzus van United Touch Z (1.70m GP), Zypria S (1.70m GP) and Deauville (1.60m GP), vooral omdat deze van Heartbreaker afstamt. “Ik heb Romanov gehad, de Heartbreaker die later 5* Grand Prix won met Bertram Allen. Een fenomeen en ik droom ervan om nog eens zo’n paard te hebben. Als het niet voor mezelf is, dan wel voor mijn dochter die nu veertien is.” Qua pedigree heeft hij goed geïnvesteerd, want de overgrootmoeder Cantate Touch sprong 1.60m GP met Ben Schröder en gaf twee 1.60m GP paarden. Over-overgrootmoeder is de beroemde Classic Touch, een fenomeen onder Ludger Beerbaum en moeder van een 1.60m en 1.55m Grand Prix paard.
Voor 28.000 euro werd de Comme Il Faut uit Inka van ’t Roosakker (Calvaro Z) ter plaatse aangekocht door klanten uit Polen. Inka gaf al vier Grand Prix paarden (een op 1.70m niveau, één 1.60m paard en twee op 1.50m niveau).
