FFA consignor Stefano Rissone: ‘Breeding is passion, but passion is not enough’

The tension is starting to rise for Stefano Rissone at the Flanders Embryo Auction during MET Oliva. He already has experience with auctions. The Italian vet, breeder and horse owner has bought at auctions and last year organized the ELVO Foal Auction in Italy for the third time. But tonight, he is presenting his first embryo at the Flanders Embryo Auction.

It concerns an Ermitage Kalone embryo out of Helena du Pratel (Lauterbach), a half-sister to two 1.60m Grand Prix horses. The granddam is a half-sister to three 1.60m Grand Prix horses.

“I have been a veterinarian for twenty years, specializing in mare management and reproduction, but I have only been breeding myself for six years. At first with showjumping mares I already owned, until I started investing in better damlines. Helena du Pratel, the dam of this embryo, for example. She is eight years old and competes at 1.35m level. She also combines two careers: breeding and sport, so we are taking it easy with her. She is a blood-type horse, sensitive, with plenty of scope. She recently changed riders and is now getting used to that. A very interesting mare to breed a modern sport horse from.”

“My dream is to breed an Olympic showjumper. I can’t afford to buy one myself, but perhaps I can breed one,” hopes Stefano Rissone. “The breeding of showjumpers is evolving rapidly, and I believe the chances of producing a top jumper are greater if you start with a damline that has already proven itself. De spanning bij Stefano Rissone begint met het uur op te lopen op MET Oliva. Ervaring heeft hij al met veilingen, hij kocht in veilingen en organiseerde vorig jaar voor de derde keer de ELVO Foal Auction in Italië. Maar, vanavond heeft hij zijn eerste embryo in de Flanders Embryo Auction. 

Het gaat om een Ermitage Kalone uit Helena du Pratel (Lauterbach), halfzus van twee 1.60m Grand Prix paarden. De grootmoeder is een halfzus van drie 1.60m Grand Prix paarden.

“Ik ben al twintig jaar dierenarts, gespecialiseerd in merriebegeleiding en reproductie, maar fok nog maar zes jaar zelf. Eerst met springmerries die ik al had, tot ik ben gaan investeren in de betere merrielijnen. Helena du Pratel, de moeder van dit embryo, bijvoorbeeld. Ze is acht jaar en springt 1.35m. Ze heeft ook twee carrières te combineren: fokkerij en sport, dus we doen het rustig aan met haar. Het is een bloedpaard, sensitief, met veel vermogen. Ze had een ruiterwissel waar ze nu aan begint te wennen. Een heel interessante merrie om een modern sportpaard mee te fokken.”

“Mijn droom is om een Olympisch springpaard te fokken. Ik kan die zelf niet kopen, maar fokken misschien wel”, hoopt Stefano Rissone. “De fokkerij van springpaarden evalueert snel en ik denk dat de kans groter is op een goed springpaard als je begint met een merrielijn die zich al bewezen heeft. De merrie Helena du Pratel gaf via ET dit embryo. “Ik verkoop nu om de kosten te dekken. Fokken is passie, maar passie is niet genoeg. Om te overleven en gemotiveerd te blijven, moet je met goede merrielijnen beginnen en commercieel denken. De veilingen spelen daar een belangrijke rol in.”
