German public embraces jumping foals Flanders Foal Auction
“We got 20,000 euros! There.. across the lake”, auctioneer Koen Olaerts smiled from his podium. Pouring rain had flooded the arena at Holger Hetzel’s venue. At Flanders Foal Auction, the foals were dancing through the water, the runners had a harder time on soggy trainers. The ‘seahorses of Flanders’, as speaker Henner Hoeschen referred to the foals, were selling well anyway. An average price of 18,524 euros for the foals, and most changed hands on the spot. With this result, a chilly summer evening on Saturday 29 July ended well after all, especially with the highlight of the evening: 40,000 euros for Walnut de Muze’s granddaughter Eyeflash DW Z (Emerald x For Pleasure).
Downpour came from the sky when the 6-year-olds finished their jump-off in the finals of the young horse championships at Holger Hetzel Stables. The poor weather could not spoil the fun though, since Hetzel’s stable rider Laurens Houben secured the first and the second prize, creating a euphoric mood for the rest of the evening. The Belgian showjumper treated himself to a fantastic filly from the Roosakker line for 17,000 euros: the large and strongly built Celine Z (Cornado I x Balou du Rouet).
Holger Hetzel also struck himself with his ‘right-hand women’ Anna Lehmeyer and Christine Dorenkamp, who have been working with him for years. For 23,000 euros, they bought Chamarco (Chacoon Blue x Cornet Obolensky) from the family of Corofino I and II. Dutch rider Bart Bles his name was put on the contract as well, joining the syndicate. Bles himself bought one of the finest and best galloping colts of the evening for 15,000 euros: Tiziano (Balou du Reventon x Boss VDL). “I have had the 1.60m Grand Prix horse Elovely myself and she is the half-sister of this colt’s dam”, the showjumping rider explains. “I think it is the colt of your dreams.”
15 of the 21 foals were sold on site, in other words: over 70 percent of the collection. Just a week earlier in Moerzeke, two-thirds of the foals were sold online and by phone.
Loyal sponsor
Ulli Horrig from Luxembourg turned out to be a great investor, buying five foals at the Flanders Foal Auction. Mr Horrig has been a loyal sponsor of Holger Hetzel since 1990. He had something to celebrate as well, since his Carrera Crystal (by Carrera VDL) became the number two ranked 6-year-old in the finals. “And he bought that one in my auction last year”, says Holger Hetzel, who was very happy with the Flanders Foal Auction during his 'Tiemeyer x Hetzel Young Horse Masters'.
“My favourite, even before the auction started, was the last one in the auction”, says Ulli Horrig. “The Emerald mare out of the damline of Walnut de Muze.” And that made for an exciting bidding duel that ended at 40,000 euros and with a loud applause. But before that, the horse enthusiast bought another four foals. “I looked at them all in the presentation. I have been buying foals for 50 years and a lot of international horses have come out of that. Who knows, maybe these will also come under the saddle of team Hetzel. My relationship to Holger? He has been my friend for forty years. I bought him his very first Grand Prix horse and through the years, we have been through a lot and experienced great things together.”
The second most expensive colt of the evening was the beautiful Cha Cha A Z (Comme il Faut x Diamant de Semilly) for 36,000 euros. “We can look back on the auction with a very good feeling. It was great to see that the foals were so well received by this professional audience and we are happy to follow this up again”, Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts concluded afterwards.
Next auctions
The Flanders train keeps going, as the next auctions are scheduled for 11 and 12 August. First an embryo auction in Dublin, followed by a foal auction at Sentower Park in Opglabbeek. “A challenging weekend, but we are confident, seeing the quality we have selected.”

Duits publiek omarmt Flanders springveulens
“20.000 euro, ja daar aan de overkant van het meer.” Veilingmeester Koen Olaerts lacht vanaf zijn podium. Een stortbui heeft de outdoorpiste bij Holger Hetzel blank gezet. De veulens van de Flanders Foal Auction dansen door het water, de lopers hebben het zwaarder op doorweekte sneakers. De ‘zeepaardjes van Flanders’, zoals speaker Henner Hoeschen ze noemde, werden toch goed verkocht. Gemiddeld voor 18.524 euro, waarvan het gros terplekke van eigenaar wisselde. En zo kwam een frisse zomeravond op zaterdag 29 juli toch nog goed ten einde, zeker met het klapstuk van de avond: 40.000 euro voor Walnut de Muze’s kleindochter Eyeflash DW Z (Emerald x For Pleasure).
De hemelsluizen trokken open toen de laatste zesjarige klaar was met z’n barrage in de finale van het jonge-paardenkampioenschap op Holger Hetzel Stables, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. Hetzel-stalruiter Laurens Houben won de eerste én tweede prijs en dat zorgde voor een feestelijke stemming tot laat op de avond. De Belgische springruiter trakteerde zichzelf op een fantastisch merrieveulen uit de Roosakker-stam voor 17.000 euro: de grootramige Celine Z (Cornado I x Balou du Rouet).
Holger Hetzel sloeg zelf ook toe met zijn ‘rechterhanden’ Anna Lehmeyer en Christine Dorenkamp, die al jaren bij hem in dienst zijn. Voor 23.000 euro kochten ze Chamarco (Chacoon Blue x Cornet Obolensky) uit de stam van Corofino I en II. Bart Bles tekende ook bij en zelf kocht hij één van de mooiste en best galopperende hengstveulens van de avond voor 15.000 euro: Tiziano (Balou du Reventon x Boss VDL). “Het 1.60m Grand Prix paard Elovely, de halfzus van de moeder, heb ik zelf nog gehad”, vertelt de springruiter. “Ik vind het een droom van een veulen.”
Vijftien van de 21 verkochte veulens werden op locatie afgetekend, oftewel meer dan 70 procent van de collectie. Een week eerder in Moerzeke werd juist tweederde van de veulens online en per telefoon verkocht.
Trouwe sponsor
Grootafnemer met vijf veulens was Ulli Horrig uit Luxemburg, al sinds 1990 trouwe sponsor van Holger Hetzel. Ook hij had wat te vieren, want zijn Carrera Crystal (Carrera VDL) was de nummer twee in de finale voor zesjarigen. “En die kocht hij vorig jaar in mijn veiling”, vertelt Holger Hetzel, die zeer content was met de Flanders Foal Auction tijdens zijn ‘Tiemeyer x Hetzel Young Horse Masters’.
“Mijn favoriet, al voordat de veiling begon, was de laatste in de veiling”, vertelt Ulli Horrig. “De Emerald-merrie uit de stam van Walnut de Muze.” En dat zorgde voor een spannend biedduel dat stopte bij 40.000 euro en een luid applaus. Maar voor die tijd kocht de paardenliefhebber ook al vier veulens. “Ik heb ze allemaal bekeken in de presentatie. Ik koop al vijftig jaar veulens en daar zijn al heel wat internationale paarden uit voortgekomen. Wie weet komen deze straks ook onder het zadel van team Hetzel. Mijn relatie tot Holger? Hij is al veertig jaar mijn vriend. Ik kocht zijn allereerste Grand Prix-paard voor hem en we hebben veel meegemaakt en samen mooie dingen beleefd.”
Het op een na duurste veulen van de avond was de prachtige Cha Cha A Z (Comme il Faut x Diamant de Semilly) voor 36.000 euro. “We kijken met een zeer goed gevoel terug op de veiling. Het was mooi om te zien dat de veulens zo goed ontvangen werden door dit professionele publiek en we geven hier graag weer een vervolg aan”, vertellen Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts na afloop.
Volgende veilingen
De Flanders trein dendert voort, want de volgende veilingen staat op 11 en 12 augustus gepland. Eerst een embryoveiling in Dublin, gevolgd door een veulenveiling op Sentower Park in Opglabbeek. “Een uitdagend weekend, maar we hebben er alle vertrouwen in, lettend op wat we geselecteerd hebben.”
